Light Over Darkness
Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins - 1 Peter 4:8
Often in moral discourse persons talk past one another because they use different levels of moral reasoning. One is speaking in terms of rules, while another is speaking in terms of principles, and a third is outlining a broad theological or philosophical narrative paradigm. In theology, Divine Command approach to ethics tend to be deontological (intrinsically “right” or “wrong”). Something is moral because God commands it. Something is immoral because God forbids it.
Wisdom involves ethics, but it goes well beyond it. Wisdom tends to have its hand on the pulse of the moment. In this respect it is concerned with practical aspects of knowledge and experience while morality tends to infuse moral observation and experience with belief and a visceral reaction to events.
In my opinion, the Bible is God's absolute standard of authority to reveal his will, yet we must study to understand and apply it. We must apply the word properly, study diligently, and pray for wisdom in all things. We should never leave out grace, LOVE, kindness, and patience when debating issues.
Agree to disagree, but do it in love.
